This remodel and decoration project was for a client that moved into a home that had been renovated by the previous owner. We adapted the contemporary setting to feature and highlight her varied collections of important contemporary paintings, antiquities and Biedermeier furniture. We built a full range of custom furniture to offset the client's collection. The soft colors of the oriental carpets and finishes were chosen to accentuate the warm atmosphere of the home.
This project was a complete renovation of a home built in 1970 by the architect Irving Tobocman. The spatial planning involved converting the garage into a guest room while adding another garage in a more suitable location as well as transforming an indoor pool into a master suite which includes a bedroom, study, master bath, and separate closet and dressing rooms. Though an extensive renovation, one of the goals was respecting the original architectural details while enhancing the layout to bring the house up to modern standards.
This goal of this house was to imbue a sense of luxury and comfort for the young family moving in. Using a palette of rich colors, fine rugs, and antiques we created the subtle air of an English country retreat. We enveloped the master bedroom in pine paneling, installed a beautiful, antique four-poster bed and used camel and ivory colored fabric to compliment the warmth. We inlaid intricate tile patterns into the slate flooring and built custom cabinetry throughout the home.
This weekend retreat is an hour's drive from Detroit. It was built in the 1880's and was in need of a lot of work! Though it looked like a wreck the features and bones of the house were very good. We went through major renovations. When we were finished it was the ultimate English country home - replete with English and American antiques, artwork and 7 fireplaces. It felt like a home that was passed down for generations. One of the special features was a built in a window seat - perfect for watching the horses galloping in the surrounding fields.
Finding this particular house in Palm Springs - it had a unique quality that was more comfortable and welcoming than a more typical mid-century home. Designed by the architect William Codey it was a step away from the stark designs typical to the area. This house featured extensive overhanging trellises to soften the light entering the house. Quartzite floors and low slung, white-washed plank and beam ceilings and white stucco walls ran throughout the house. The home lent itself to casual and comfortable furniture and textural, neutral colors complimented with modern artwork and ethnic baskets and crafts.
This is the second home I've renovated for this client. The primary focus was the display of his important collection of Southeast Asian antiquities, African sculpture and contemporary paintings. This house features expansive walls of glass facing a wooded ravine as well as a tall central atrium open to several levels. We created a language of tracery wall trim, door trim, steel stair railings and custom built furniture to display the artwork. The aesthetic is meant to impart the quiet grace of a traditional Japanese tea-house. An elaborate lighting system was designed to best highlight the fine art pieces.
